The Origins of Mother’s Day
In 1908, a woman named Anna Jarvis held the first Mother’s Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia. This was the beginning of a national holiday that would be celebrated throughout the country.
She held the ceremony at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton and handed out a few hundred white carnations to the women who attended. It was this act that led to the practice of gifting mothers with flowers on Mother’s Day.
Anna, who had just lost her own mother to illness, wanted to create a day to remember her mother and decided that the second Sunday in May was the perfect day.
As a result of her hard work and determination, the holiday became a recognized United States holiday in 1914. President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation that made Mother’s Day a legal holiday.
