What is a Longline Bra?
The Longline bra is a bra that extends down below the usual bust band in a longer length, sometimes to the waist.
This style began back in the 1940s and 1950s when the cone shaped, ultra-supportive and ultra constricting bra styles were in fashion.Many original longline bra styles were designed to wear under bridal gowns and were usually strapless. This is still a popular bridal gown bra style today. In the 1940s Women wanted to show off their curves, lift their breasts and suck in their waists, and most longline style bras were effective at this (albeit extremely uncomfortable). The longline style helped the 1940s woman get shape, lift and support for the desired look, improving posture and, when paired with a girdle, providing a smoothing effect (credit: “1940s Lingerie”). The longline bra remained a popular style through the 1950s as well, up until the 1960s with the Woodstock era and the trend of going braless, and wearing simpler less structured bras.

If you don’t get the size right, you can end up with rolling fabric – this usually happens if you order too small a size, but can also happen with certain fabrics. § Some petite size women, or those with shorter torsos can find this style doesn’t hit them in the right place and can be uncomfortable or too long. Try a shorter length longline bra to fix this.
